Choosing a baby crib

Things to consider when Choosing a baby crib.

· Price range.. it can start as low as 80$ for a standard size crib and could reach thousands.. how much you are willing to pay and what features you need will narrow and define your search.

· Organic/ eco-friendly/ non-toxic finishing.. Although safety standards limits the use of harmful chemicals but you might still want to consider buying an organic crib or at least look for one that has a non toxic finishing.

· Drop side.. Baby cribs come with fixed, single-drop or double-drop sides that slide down. While drop sides are convenient and popular, millions of cribs of different brand names (even best sellers), were recalled the last few years because of infant death or injury due to drop side and parts wear and tear. New crib safety standards are expected soon, and manufacturers may not be allowed to make new drop-side cribs.

· Convertible.. Some baby cribs are convertible to toddler beds, others to full-size adult beds with extra kit that usually sold separately. This might be an addition to the cost; you can consider using the crib for siblings and buying a new toddler bed.

· Manufacturing standards.. · Usually you don’t have to worry about that because any crib manufactured after February 1974 must conform to strict safety codes, unless you are planning to use an old family crib, then you have to compare its features with the current safety standards.

What choices you have:

· IKEA cribs: starts from 80$-160$... fixed sides, convertible, different colors (pink, blue, white and natural) not organic, but as they claim it meets the safety standards regarding chemicals used in finishing.

· Da Vinci cribs... The Jenny Lind line is non-toxic finishing and formaldehyde free, for a nice price around 220$ but has a drop side.

· Graco - Eco Friendly Dakota Classic Crib.. The Dakota Collection is the first Graco Baby Furniture to be eco friendly. It is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It costs around 200$.
